Buffalo Maciocia Farms

The story of Élevages Buffalo Maciocia, today Canada’s largest buffalo herd (500), began in 2009 when two Italian-born entrepreneurs, Mario Maciocia and Frank Abbale, purchased a herd of buffalo in Vermont and settled in Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu with the dream of creating Italy’s famed fresh mozzarella in America.

The first few years were spent on herd improvement, equipment purchases, and research and development to master this famous protein-rich milk. Back then, almost all of the herd’s milk was sold to Saputo, until Élevages Maciocia entered into a partnership with Fromagerie Polyethnique in Saint-Robert for the production of the country’s first buffalo milk yogurts.

Today, Fromagerie Polyethnique continues to produce all their yogurts and fresh cheeses.
